Wine Whales & Wildflowers

Overview

For many, Whales & Spring Wildflowers are “bucket list” items, and if you haven’t ticked them off yet, this is the tour for you!

As if the exquisite beauty of this Springtime floral extravaganza would not be enough, the whales come to South Africa to breed and frolick in our waters at the same time, and we visit some of the very best land based whale watching sites and whale nurseries in Southern Africa, in Hermanus and De Hoop, another absolute gem in the South African crown-  sea, sand dunes, the vlei, a floral sensation of rare fynbos plants and more (See more about these magnificent mammals in our Southern Right Whale feature on this website)

The cherry on the top is that all of these areas are conveniently placed to include our world renowned wineland areas, in this spectacle of nature at its best.

The tour starts and ends in Cape Town and at the end of these 10 days you will very likely have a whole   interpretation of www….. . after all, what is the “world wide webb” in comparison to Wine Whales & Wildflowers!

Day two takes us via Velddrif, Piketburg, Elands Bay & Lamberts Bay . From there we head on to the Ramskop Nature Reserve , situated overlooking the Clanwilliam Dam, with beautifully laid out walking paths offering spectacular views towards the Cedarberg mountains. Clanwilliam is best known for its Rooibos tea, being the only place in the world where this is grown, and a visit to this area would not be complete without a tea tasting at the Rooibos Tea House

Day 3

Overnight Clanwilliam

Today we will travel via the Pakhuis Pass to the Nieuwoudtville area, popularly known as the bulb capital of the world due to its abundant display of indigenous flowering bulbs in Spring and Winter.  We visit the 115ha Nieuwoudtville Wild Flower Reserve with over 300 species of indigenous flora,  and the Hantam National Botanical Gardens, where an amazing 1350 plant species have been recorded to date. Declared a botanical treasure of international importance, the Hantam Botanical Gardens is SA’s ninth national botanical garden, and has superb trails for visitors to experience and appreciate the flowers on foot. Also on the agenda is the Matjiesfontein farm , reported to be the single farm with the largest diversity of wildflowers anywhere in the world. We make our way back to Clanwilliam for a second night via the Vanrhyns Pass, Vanrhynsdorp, Vredendal and Klawer, stopping off at Stellar Organics  Winery, South Africas largest producer of fine, organic , fair trade wine, if time permits

Overnight Farmer Redbeard, Ashton

From Clanwilliam we start heading south to Worcester to visit the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden, a truly unique 154 ha garden at the foot of the Hex River Mountain range, displaying a wide variety of arid and semi arid plants, with a large succulent collection, rivers of colour created by the orange Namaqualand daisies, annuals and Vygies. Having feasted on wildflowers, we move on through some of the wine estates of the Robertson Wine Route, where, not for the first time, we are spoilt for choice with the estates of Nuy Winery, Rooiberg, Graham Beck, Arabella, Ashton Kelder, Springfield, Bon Courage, Viljoensdrift, Van Loveren, De Wetshof , Weltevrede , Bonnievale Wines, Windfall and Lord’s all within striking distance, before overnighting at a hidden gem just outside Ashton

Day 5

Overnight de Hoop

Day five sees the start of among other things, the whale watching part of our adventure as we head for De Hoop Nature Reserve, a marine protected area believed to be SA’s largest Southern Right Whale Nursery. En route we will pass through – or past – more of the Robertson Wine Route, but with the prize of De Hoop in our sights, we will more than likely plan to reach De Hoop as early as we can.

Day 6

Overnight Hermanus

De Hoop is a paradise of its own, and we will take in as much of this incredibly special treasure as we can, before making our way westwards  to Hermanus, another whale watching hotspot, and one of the best land based whale watching areas.  But before we do that, we will make a very worthwhile little detour to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa.

Day 7

Overnight Hermanus

Whales are not the only attraction in Hermanus. In fact, at this time of the year we can expect to enjoy Wine, Whales and Wild flowers in this Overberg area. as not only is Hermanus home to the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, but the area boasts it’s own Wine Route in the Hemel – en – Aarde Valley, which we will explore and sample today
